Dear Parents,

On Tuesday, March 11th, the Kindergarten 2013 Iowa Mid-Year Test of Basic Skills, ITBS, begins.  The test will take three (3) days to complete.  Testing sessions will take place each morning beginning at 9:10 a.m.  Please have your Kindergartener at school promptly at 9:00 a.m. following a good night’s sleep and a balanced breakfast.  During Kindergarten testing, the Pre-K children will continue to work with Ms. Kathleen.

The main purpose of the ITBS is to provide the school with information that can be used to improve instruction, help teachers make sound educational decisions about each student’s year-to-year growth, and to identify each child’s strongest and weakest areas of development.  Another rationale for our Kindergarten testing is that the test will help to prepare children for future testing.  We view test-taking as a “life skill”, and we have found that this week of testing introduces children to a test-taking environment without the academic pressure commonly associated with testing.

The results from the ITBS will not be used to grade students.  Instead teachers and administrators at MMS will use the results to monitor students’ learning of many of the important skills taught in school and help the teachers prepare lessons for the remainder of the year.  The results will be passed onto your child’s first grade teacher for 2013-2014.  Scores from tests, like the ITBS, cannot replace a teacher’s observations and judgments, but they can provide useful supplementary information for the teacher, the parent, and the student.  When test results are used in conjunction with other information from both the classroom and the home, teachers and parents can work together to identify and address the individual needs of each child.

The tests will be machine-scored and test results will be mailed to you.

Thank you for your support!

Sincerely,

Ms. Renee Brohamer
