Happy Birthday Johnny Appleseed!
(Born John Chapman, Sept. 26, 1774)
Today we celebrated Johnny Appleseed’s birthday!
This morning the children made two, homemade apple pies! They thoroughly enjoyed slicing the apples and mixing the ingredients. All the children loved the smell of Cinnamon, some were not so sure about the smell of Nutmeg! The children could not wait to eat their pie with ice cream (yummy)! Pictures will be posted soon!
At story time we read Steven Kellogg’s version of Johnny Appleseed.
I have attached our recipe in case you would like to make one at home.
Johnny Appleseed Day
Apple Pie Recipe
Pie Dough Crusts (2 per pie)
Prepare bottom pie dough and place in pie pan/plate.
6 20oz. apples – peeled, quartered and sliced (we used half green and half red)
2 Tablespoons of Flour
½ Cup of Sugar
1 tsp. of Cinnamon
Sprinkle of Nutmeg
Stir Filling Ingredients together in a big bowl. Place filling into prepared pie pan/plate. Add several dabs of butter on top of apples. Before placing top pie dough on top -cut a few lines (approx. 3 inches – in a sun/star pattern) in center of top pie dough (for ventilation). Place top pie dough on top of apples. Fold edges under and crimp.
Bake pie at 450 degrees for 30 minutes. Check – bake 15 more minutes or until juices are bubbling.
Cool – Serve with Ice Cream and Enjoy!
Have a nice day,
Ms. Elizabeth and Ms. Jessica
